Ancient Asia Minor

Over the centuries the fortunes, the people and the geographic borders of the countries and islands of the Aegean region have changed many times.

Political and religious differences between the countries bordering the Aegean have often divided the people, raising invisible barriers to cultural exchange.

5000 years of turbulent history has left its mark, with an untold wealth of historical buildings both in Greece and Turkey. The dawning of the third millennium has heralded a warming of relations between Turkey and Greece, paving the way for some exciting tourism opportunities.

It is now easier than ever to combine a visit to the Turkish Aegean region with a visit to the nearby Greek Islands, making it possible to explore a region that not only spans the entire history of civilization, but also two continents.

Access from Istanbul to Bodrum, the premier Turkish coastal resort right in the heart of the Aegean region, is easy and fast. Bodrum, Halikarnassos in ancient times, is an ideal location from which to explore the many historical sites and to appreciate the beauty of the rugged Turkish landscape.

A short distance to the west, and parallel to the Turkish Aegean resorts from Marmaris to Kusadasi, are the Greek Dodecanese Islands that include Rhodes, Kos, Samos, and Chios, and further west, the famous Island of Santorini (Thira).

In ancient times the region that is now modern Greece and Turkey, was was united as a single entity under the rule of successive dynasties. Since the first and second world wars, the political boundaries and religious differences between Greece and Turkey have made access between the two countries difficult. Over the last few years, relations between Greece and Turkey have become warmer, with cross border formalities being made easier for tourists.

It is now possible to explore the ancient aspects of Greece and Turkey, while at the same time appreciating the subtle differences between two very different modern cultures.

Fira Town

Probably the most impressive of all the Greek Islands, Santorini is the most southerly island in the Cyclades group. It is included here as a tour option because of its extraordinary beauty formed from the geological changes that took place at the time of the volcanic explosion in 1450BC.

The Minoan City, destroyed by a volcano in the 15th Century BC, has now been excavated revealing many paintings and other artifacts.

The Islands archaeological museum houses a collection of pots and other treasures dating from the Roman era.
